The Flag of the United States of America has changed throughout the years becoming the flag we see today. The design of the flag has been modified 26 times officially since 1777. The last state to be added to flag making up the 50 states the stars signify was Hawaii (August 21, 1959) but the new flag wasn't adopted until 1960.
The 13 stripes represent the thirteen British Colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britian, and became the first states in the Union.
The Flag is also nicknamed as "The Stars and Stripes", "Old Glory", and "The Star Spangled Banner"
